Subject: "United News" (not "Universal")
Retrospective of military successes of 1944 : bombings in Europe and Japan ; D-Day ; liberation of Rome, Paris, Brussels ; Soviet advances in the East ; liberation of Guam and the Philippines ; "greatest naval engagement ever". Military photographers and cinematographers ; film of war industries ; Quebec and Dumbarton Oaks conferences. Brief notice of the election, and deaths of Al Smith and Wendell Wilkie. View forward to 1945 — but no hint of atomic energy, which was to be the most important story of the year.
Long segment on V-1 “buzz-bomb” bombardment (“23 000 buildings utterly destroyed, 5000 lives lost”), emphasizing perseverance of Londoners, and terror of sudden destruction, but no mention of V-2. “Look at this wreckage and see New York in the next war” — a plea for world peace.
